According to a release, the John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration was established in 2022 "as a way to honor the late icon's indelible legacy." The legendary head coach once famously declared his love for Thanksgiving Day football, saying, "There's no place that I would rather be today on Thanksgiving than right here, right now, at a football game."

This year's celebration will include special coins and a jersey patch with Madden's likeness. Each network will name a Madden Thanksgiving MVP, who will be awarded a $10,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to a high school or youth football program in their name. The league will also auction off game-used items from the three Thanksgiving Day games to benefit the John Madden Foundation.

Each network broadcast will pay homage to Madden and his long-lasting legacy. The Hall of Fame coach's own words will be heard before each game in a special NFL-produced Madden Hallmark explaining what Thanksgiving meant to him.

The Thanksgiving Day schedule will kick off with the Green Bay Packers taking on the Detroit Lions on Fox, followed by the Kansas City Chiefs meeting the Dallas Cowboys on CBS. The nightcap will feature an AFC North matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals on NBC.
