Mets' Steve Cohen Sells 18-Karat Gold Toilet at Auction for $12.1 Million
When one has an extra $12.1 million burning a hole in their pocket, there's really nothing logically left to do except purchase a gold toilet from New York Mets owner Steve Cohen.
Right?
Well, one lucky bidder did exactly that on Tuesday at a Sotheby's auction. Will Stern of Cllct reported there was a single bid for Maurizio Cattelan's 18-karat gold, fully functional toilet that was consigned by Cohen and titled "America."

The toilet contains approximately $10 million worth of gold that weighs 2,440 ounces, and the final price ended up being higher than the starting bid of $10 million due to those pesky buyer's premium and fees one has to deal with when spending eight figures on a toilet.
Cohen acquired the toilet—which is one of two fabricated examples—in 2017, although it started in the Guggenheim Museum's bathroom. The second fabricated example has never been found after it was stolen in 2019 at a Blenheim Palace exhibition.
Cohen's Mets had the second-highest active payroll in Major League Baseball last season behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers, so spending money is not an issue for the National League East team under its current owner.
But now he might have some extra cash lying around to spend even more on free agents this offseason after selling this toilet, which would bolster the team's chances to make a deep playoff run.
Mets fans would probably rather see their owner with a gold World Series ring than a gold toilet anyway.
