Unique details of the patch include the traditional compass rose that has been used as Seattle's primary logo since the 1993 season, an ode to its original look with the same lettering on the patch that used for the 1977 uniforms and a silhouette of Mt. Rainier that is located just outside of the city.
Another nod to the franchise's history is the 116 orienting lines around the inside edge of the patch, celebrating the 2001 team that tied the MLB record for most wins in a single season.
The Mariners were formed in February 1976 when the American League awarded an expansion franchise to Seattle. Their nickname was chosen six months later from a pool of 15,000 total entries, per MLB.com.
Playing their first season in 1977, the Mariners are the second-oldest active sports franchise in Seattle behind the NFL's Seahawks (1974). They have made the playoffs six times, advancing to the ALCS four times with no World Series appearances to date.
The vibes around the Mariners right now are about as high as they have ever been. They are coming off a 2025 in which they won the AL West for the first time in 24 years and took the Toronto Blue Jays to seven games in the ALCS.
Josh Naylor, who was a key midseason acquisition that propelled the Mariners to a division title, didn't take long in free agency before deciding to stay with the club. He agreed to a five-year deal worth $92.5 million on Monday.
Seattle will open the 2026 regular season at home against the Cleveland Guardians on March 26.
