Alex Ovechkin Makes NHL History, Breaks Gordie Howe Record With Goal vs. Kings

Julia StumbaughNov 18, 2025

Alex Ovechkin made Capital One Arena history during the Washington Capitals' Monday night home win over the Los Angeles Kings.

Ovechkin, who surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time goalscoring leader last April, scored the 903rd goal of his career Monday to seal the 2-1 victory for the Caps.

The tally marked the captain's 442nd goal at Capital One Arena, beating out Gordie Howe for the most goals at a single venue in NHL history.

Howe, who spent the first 25 years of his legendary career with the Detroit Red Wings, set the previous record by scoring 441 goals at Detroit Olympia.

Ovechkin has now set the new standard just 19 games into his 21st season in Washington D.C.

Breaking Howe's home arena record wasn't the only reason Ovechkin's second-period strike will make it into NHL record books.

The goal also marked the 150th game-winning goal of Ovechkin's regular-season and playoff career, leaving him just one behind former Caps winger Jaromir Jagr (151) for the most deciding tallies in NHL history.

After a relatively slow start to the season saw Ovechkin score just two goals during his team's 8-6-1 start to the season, the Capitals star is heating up.

Ovechkin now has three goals and five points during the Caps' most recent 2-1-1 stretch, including tallies in a Nov. 11 win at the Carolina Hurricanes and Nov. 15 shootout loss to the visiting New Jersey Devils.

The Capitals, who made a surprising run to the second round last season, are currently sitting in the basement of the Metropolitan Division after ranking 26th in total goalscoring during a 9-8-2 start to the 2025-26 campaign.

Getting more production from the NHL's all-time leading goalscorer will be key to the Caps' hopes of climbing back up the division standings this winter.
