'You Don't Need to be Michael Jordan,' Jags HC Coen Reveals Advice to Trevor Lawrence

Doric SamNov 17, 2025

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a dominant offensive performance in Sunday's 35-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, and head coach Liam Coen's advice to quarterback Trevor Lawrence seemed to be the catalyst for the big day.

"Trevor and I had a good conversation [last week] in terms of just, 'Hey man, cut it loose and let it rip when we do have some of those opportunities,' and, 'Hey man, yes, we don't want to turn the ball over. We want to turn it over on defense and we want to keep it on offense, but we can't be thinking about that or trying to play to not make a mistake at all,'" Coen revealed after the win, per ESPN's Michael DiRocco. "… You don't need to be [Michael] Jordan. Point guards, facilitators, distributors, that's what we need, and that's what we talked about."

Lawrence, who was playing without his top three pass catchers, Travis Hunter (knee), Brian Thomas Jr. (ankle) and Brenton Strange (hip), due to injuries, threw for 153 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 14-of-22 passing. The Jaguars totaled 192 rushing yards and didn't punt for the entire game.

The win surely helped restore some of the positive vibes in Jacksonville after the team blew a 19-point fourth-quarter lead against the Houston Texans in a 36-29 loss in Week 10. Coen is hoping that Lawrence and the rest of his players keep that same energy for the rest of the season.

"Let's go out and cut it loose for four quarters, as a team, and see what happens," Coen said of his advice to his players. "Let's just go cut it loose, man. I don't want to think about what could happen, what should happen, what happened on the play before, what's going to happen three plays from now. Just play in the moment, stay in the moment, pick each other up when something bad happens and let's move on as a team."

The Jaguars (6-4) will look to keep the momentum going when they visit the Arizona Cardinals (3-7) next Sunday.
