Philadelphia Is Back at the Top of the NFC
4 of 4.jpg)
The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Detroit Lions 16-9 Sunday night in the City of Brotherly Love to remain atop the NFC through 11 weeks.
It was not a pretty game, and the offense tallied less than 300 total yards, but the defending Super Bowl champions did just enough to earn the win and continue their quest to get back to the grandest stage in professional football.
Jalen Hurts threw for just 135 yards with no touchdowns but he did score on the ground. Saquon Barkley stayed under 100 yards and AJ Brown caught seven passes for just 49 yards.
None of those numbers are particularly encouraging for a team that has managed to win games but not convincingly or in a manner that convinces many that they will be back in the thick of things come playoff time.
Still, the only statistic that truly matters is the win-loss column, and thus far, the champs are 8-2 and looking like a favorite to play well into January and February.
How they will fare when they finally do need to throw up some numbers and put on an offensive show to win a game is the real question. We saw them fire things up against the Rams back at the beginning of the season, overcoming a big deficit to win via blocked field goal, but they will not be able to count on just turning it on when they want or need to.
A big test will come against Dallas next week.
The Cowboys have a putrid defense, but they also have an offense that can hang with any in football. If they are able to put up yards and score, Philly may be forced to rediscover their potent offense or suffer an upset loss.
Still, the Eagles have done everything they have to at this point, even if it has not been pretty, and the winners of two out of three of the last NFC titles are looking to stake their claim to another as the potential start of a new dynasty.
