What is Trinity Rodman's NWSL Future? 'At Least' 3 English Teams Pursuing USWNT Star
As Trinity Rodman continues to work her way back from a knee injury, her future with the Washington Spirit and NWSL are very much up in the air right now.
Per The Athletic's Meg Linehan and Tom Bogert, Rodman's camp has had talks with "at least three" clubs in the English Women's Super League as her deal with the Spirit is set to expire at the end of this season.
There were no specific English clubs mentioned, but Bogert previously reported in January that Chelsea and Arsenal were among "many" monitoring the situation.
The report notes Rodman's team is also still negotiating with the NWSL, but the league's current salary cap structure could make it difficult for any team to match what she could get elsewhere.
Rodman is in the final season of a four-year, $1.1 million deal with the Spirit that was signed in 2022, just one year after she was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NWSL college draft.
As part of the NWSL collective bargaining agreement that went into effect this season, the cap will increase by 10 percent year over year through 2030 starting with a $3.3 million cap in 2025.
Linehan and Bogert noted there is no maximum amount that an NWSL team can pay an individual player, but clubs still have to field a full roster of 22 to 26 players.
Rodman admitted in March that "it's just a matter" before she is playing overseas.
"I've always thought about playing overseas at some point in my career," she told ESPN's Futbol W. "I think I would kick myself if I retired and hadn't done that. So it's just a matter of when I think. But yeah, just focused on this year and we'll see what happens when the time is right."
Injuries have limited Rodman to just 15 of Washington's 26 games so far this season. She most recently sprained her MCL in the Spirit's Concacaf W Champions League match against Monterrey on Oct. 15.
Rodman has five goals and two assists in her 15 appearances.
Washington is set to play the Portland Thorns in the NWSL playoff semifinals on Saturday.
