Buy or Sell WWE Survivor Series Match Rumors, Latest on John Cena, Roman Reigns, More
The pro wrestling rumor mill is on fire and the tail end of John Cena's retirement tour has a way of thawing out any and all lapsed fans.
So goes the theme this week as WWE inches closer to Survivor Series at the end of the month and works through Cena's last Raw match before a stop at the WarGames-themed PLE and his official last match in mid-December.
Alongside the intense heaps of Cena buzz? The usual pro wrestling rumor mill chatter, including things like a top Superstar's time away from screens, buzz on Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns and quite a bit more.
Here's a look at the must-know pro wrestling rumors and whether fans should buy or sell on each as legit.
Drew McIntyre's suspension update
1 of 5
The Rumor
Drew McIntyre is "suspended" as much as most wrestlers ever get "suspended," it seems. According to PW Insider (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), the punishment veers from creative's desire to layer more depth atop his ongoing feud.
Reaction
Roughly a week ago now, McIntyre leveled a WWE official with a Claymore to show he's disgusted with his WWE title matches. Well, and to get some free shots in on Rhodes. It certainly made sense, considering his latest title loss that featured referee shenanigans.
Buy or Sell?
Easy buy. A rogue McIntyre who breaks the rules, even risks getting fired, would be a fun development for his character. Fans know he's constantly getting fed into title matches the company never wants him to win, so leaning into that would keep him compelling, must-see television.
No Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns?
2 of 5
The Rumor
Speaking of Rhodes, his name has popped up big on the rumor mill this week alongside Reigns. According to Self Made Pro (h/t Ortman), some in WWE don't want the two on the same program brushing shoulders ever unless it builds toward a feud and match.
Reaction
WWE keeping their two top stars away from each other is a little silly, really, for any reason. Rhodes and Reigns having staredowns backstage or on the ramp, etc., would just be a fun, hype moment for fans and go viral on social media. Fans these days are smart enough to know it doesn't mean a build has started.
Buy or Sell?
Sell. Look, there's an air of negativity around Rhodes and Reigns and even Cena after, well, The Rock, Travis Scott, all that not-so-fun stuff. But refusing to let them on screen together unless a feud is planned would just be a bit too silly.
Forget Edge vs. John Cena?
3 of 5
The Rumor
Edge serving as the shocking final opponent for Cena isn't a theory fans will let die until someone else walks down the ramp. But according to Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp (h/t Ortman), there have been "no conversations, and no conversations about conversations" about the idea.
Reaction
This feels like somebody covering their bases, to get cliche, either to mask a surprise or avoid contractual tampering legal action. This is pro wrestling, after all, and like any sport, companies (teams) put out feelers and so do the wrestlers. There's no world where this wasn't at least brought up as a "what if?" scenario.
Buy or Sell?
Sell. Look, it's very important for fans not to build unreasonable hype around Cena's match and then sour the moment with disappointment when it's not Edge. That's the most likely outcome, as Edge surely isn't happening. But at the same time, somebody had conversations. It's simple semantics.
Conflicting Cena reports
4 of 5
The Rumor
Cena's Survivor Series plans remain a question mark. Ibou of Self Made and Cory Hayes of BodySlam.net (h/t Ortman) reported that he'll take part in the men's WarGames match. But Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t Ortman) followed that up with a report that Cena won't be in the match after it was at least briefly considered.
Reaction
Cena in the WarGames match would make a little sense. They need to fill it out with good guys to fight The Vision and friends. A tag-like environment would make sure he doesn't have to carry a match on his own (not that he can't, of course) and give him chances at amazing spots with a host of friends and opponents.
Buy or Sell?
And yet, sell on Cena being in the WarGames match. He's the intercontinental champion now and even if he wasn't, deserves the solo spotlight. He's undoubtedly heading right for a match with Dominik Mysterio.
Mysterio plans changed?
5 of 5
The Rumor
Conventional wisdom and buzz seemed to suggest fans were about to get Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series in San Diego. According to Meltzer (h/t Ortman), though, that's not on the table anymore.
Reaction
This is a disappointing one, given the location. But it's pretty easy to thread what's going on here, too, with Dominik getting the chance to take on Cena at a major event as the legend's career winds down.
Buy or Sell?
Buy, but it might be for the better. The Mysterios could link up for something similar in the future. Right now, it's Cena time. It's huge for Dom's career, and hey, maybe Rey comes out for a one-off celebration, given the occasion too.
