What is the Timeline for Brandon Aiyuk's Injury Return Amid 49ers GM's Comments?
The San Francisco 49ers intend to get wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk back on the field this year, per general manager John Lynch during an appearance on The Murph & Markus Show on KNBR.
Aiyuk hasn't played since suffering a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee on Oct. 20, 2024 in a 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Aiyuk joined the 49ers after they selected him out of Arizona State with the 25th overall pick in the NFL draft. Over five seasons, he's amassed 294 catches for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns.
He enjoyed his best campaign in 2023 en route to helping guide the 49ers to the NFC title, catching 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.
After a lengthy contract dispute that nearly led to a trade, Aiyuk and the 49ers agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract extension right before the 2024 season.
Aiyuk got off to a slow start in 2024 with 25 catches for 374 yards and no touchdowns. However, he showcased his tremendous potential during that stretch, catching eight passes for 147 yards in a 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Unfortunately, Aiyuk has been out for 13 months now, and he's one of numerous 49er players who have suffered significant injuries of late.
Of note, Fred Warner, Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams have suffered season-ending injuries, and quarterback Brock Purdy (eight missed games) and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (six missed games) have sat out for long stretches.
However, the 49ers have gone 6-4, and their next four games are against teams at or below .500. So there's a real chance the 49ers could make a run to the playoffs here despite the litany of ailments. Having Aiyuk back before the end of the season could certainly be a huge boost for the 49ers as they look for a playoff return after missing out last year.
