Is There Any Hope For The Gamecock's Offense?

Darren TrammellSep 11, 2009

It looks like the Gamecock offensive will continue to struggle based on its poor performance at NCstate.

The Head Ball Coach stuck to his word as the gamecocks commited to the run in their opener. Brian Maddox ran the best I've seen since he was high school. He showed the vision and toughness expected in a starting back finishing with 23 rushes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Jarvis Giles was the only other running back to see time and did well considering it was his first college road game. He had 5 carries for 27 yards mostly out of the shotgun and picked up many of his yards on one carry. Not bad considering the NCstate defense played better further into the game.

Garcia had a sub-par 13-22 performance throwing a the only pick of the night to a deffensive lineman. He played best in the begining of the game going through his reads and making accurate throws but quickly abandonded all his coaching later in the first half.

Garcia looked uncomfortable in the pocket and ran often. He needs learn to settle himself down outside the pocket set his feet to deliver a catchable ball. Atleast then when he gets hit it wont be off a 3 yard scramble. Bottom line Garcia has a way to go before he's ready for a SEC deffense.

The Head Ball Coach showed an obvious lack of confidence in the passing game taking very few shots down field. The passing game mostly consisted of 3 and 5 yard hitches or outs. The Georiga deffense will be much to talented for that to work long so I look for the Gamecocks to open up the play book a little more tommorrow.

The Gamecocks need to try the deep ball more to get down timing and exploit match up problems with 6'5" Tory Gurley and 6'4" Jason Barnes.

Without a legit deep threat and variety in the play calls the Gamecock offense will have trouble moving the ball against Georgia. Play actions and screen passes should be worked into the gameplan more to give Garcia the time he obviously needs.

It will be a tough one but if the offense can excecute I have the Gamecocks winning 20-14 in exciting fashion.
