Ohtani Is Your 2025 NL MVP
2 of 3
Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers are champions for the second time in as many seasons. Ohtani is about to win his second straight NL MVP award, his third consecutive MVP and his career fourth MVP later this week.
The generational two-way player has simply been special enough this season that there's no doubt about how the votes will unfold.
After winning last year's MVP as a designated hitter, Ohtani returned to pitching and went 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA in 14 starts. He was powerful at the plate once again, too, finishing with 55 home runs, 102 RBI and 20 stolen bases while batting .282.
Ohtani also had a WAR of 6.6, per Baseball Reference, down from last year's 9.2 but nevertheless impressive.
Philadelphia Phillies standout Kyle Schwarber hit 56 home runs and 132 RBI with 10 stolen bases while batting .240 and logging a WAR of 4.7. He represents Ohtani's closest competition, though Juan Soto had a solid campaign with 43 home runs, 105 RBI and 32 stolen bases.
The race might be close if Ohtani hadn't gone back to pitching. He did, though, and that'll make him only the second player (Barry Bonds) to earn four MVPs.
Raleigh Can End Judge's Reign
3 of 3
The AL MVP race is a lot more interesting, even if it really only features two front-runners. Cleveland Guardians third baseman José Ramírez was also named a finalist for the award after he helped spark a remarkable run to the AL Central title.
However, only Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge were listed in the final odds. Both had seasons that would make a third wheel irrelevant.
Judge has a strong case for winning his second straight AL MVP and the third of his career. The New York Yankees star batted a career-best .331, with a .457 on-base percentage and a .688 slugging percentage while recording an incredible WAR of 9.7.
This marks the third time in his career that Judge has led the majors in WAR, per Baseball Reference, and he was named MVP the last two times.
Raleigh, however, had a historic run while helping the Seattle Mariners reach the ALCS. His WAR of 7.4 was impressive in its own right, as was Raleigh's double duty as a catcher and switch-hitter. He hit 60 home runs compared to Judge's 53, had an AL-best 125 runs, and stole 14 bases.
The Big Dumper set single-season MLB records for home runs by a catcher and by a switch-hitter, while his 60 dingers surpassed Ken Griffey Jr.'s single-season Mariners record.
While both Raleigh and Judge are deserving of the award, the prediction here is that Raleigh wins it. Awards voters love a good story, and he represents not only a fresh one but a historic one.
