Ranking the Blue Jays and All of MLB's Powder Blue Jerseys

Tim KellyNov 10, 2025

There's a movement away from gray road jerseys—or at least always wearing gray road jerseys—happening in baseball right now.

In recent years, the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays have altogether eliminated their gray road jerseys. The Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays still have a gray road jersey in the mix, but seem to wear alternates as much or more for road games.

One of the looks the Blue Jays have opted for over wearing their gray road jerseys—which, in our opinion, are arguably the best grays in baseball—are their powder blues.

Different variations of powder blue have often been part of Toronto's uniform repertoire since they entered the league in 1977, with their current iteration introduced prior to the 2020 season and featured prominently during their run to the World Series in the 2025 playoffs.

With powder blue as in vogue as it has been since the 1980s, we've decided to rank the eight current powder blue uniforms that are actively being worn (that means powder blues like the Braves, Mariners and Montreal Expos not currently in rotation were not considered).

8. Milwaukee Brewers

1 of 8
Colorado Rockies v Milwaukee Brewers

The uniform refresh the Brewers did prior to the 2020 season that returned to the ball-in-glove logo on a full-time basis was a tremendous one.

However, one of the reasons their uniform set only came in at No. 16 on our 2025 MLB rankings is because these powder blue City Connects introduced in 2022 are awful:

  • Do people call them the "Brew Crew"? Yes. Did they need a uniform with that as their script? No.
  • The "MKE/414" hat is a jumbled mess, and doesn't really make sense to anyone outside Wisconsin.
  • There is a sleeve patch that is a grill with baseball seams on it, which is funny but also goofy.
  • Powder blue has been part of Milwaukee's uniform history, and whether it's a return to an old-school look or a modern twist like this fan edit above, the Brewers should be able to do so much better with this shade.

    7. Tampa Bay Rays

    2 of 8
Tampa Bay Rays v Baltimore Orioles

These uniforms used to have the same "Rays" script across the front that has featured on Tampa Bay's home white jerseys and alternate navy tops.

In 2022, they switched to the "sunburst" logo on the left side of the chest, which is kind of indicative of everything the organization has done wrong aesthetically since dropping "Devil" from its nickname in 2008.

Why have the Rays tried to blur the lines on what they are named after? This was a team that was named after stingrays, not sun rays. Stingrays are so much cooler and more unique. And what's crazy is they haven't altogether abandoned the stingray, because you can see it on the left sleeve.

The truth is, the Rays never should have ceased being the Devil Rays. But whether you put the sun ray or the stingray on the left side of the chest, it looks like a Grapefruit League jersey.

Perhaps that was fitting in 2025, when the Rays played their home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field. But as they move back into Tropicana Field in 2026—and certainly if they ever get a modern MLB stadium—they should overhaul or eliminate their powder blue tops.

    6. Chicago Cubs

    Pittsburgh Pirates v Chicago Cubs

The navy blue "Wrigleyville" City Connect uniforms that the Cubs wore mostly on Friday home games from 2021-2024 were retired last offseason. They were bland and uncreative, so no one really missed them.

Rather than getting a second City Connect design as other clubs such as the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks, Washington Nationals, Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants have, the Cubs instead just introduced a new powder blue alternate top.

Even though it wasn't announced as a City Connect, it does have a CC-type backstory, as noted by ESPN's Anthony Gharib:

"The logo featured on the hat and jersey patch syncs details from blues-era Cubs uniforms with inspiration from music instrument brands. The sleeve patch has a neat design reminiscent of a guitar pick with an electric bolt dividing it -- which the team says symbolizes the city's legacy "as the birthplace of the electrified blues."

These debuted on April 5, and then were worn 12 more times, all for Friday home games at Wrigley Field. They perhaps aren't destined to be a classic powder blue look, but they are a definite upgrade from the City Connects.

    5. Texas Rangers

    4 of 8
    Cleveland Guardians v Texas Rangers

In 2020, the Rangers did a refresh of their home uniforms, ditching the "Texas" script on their primary home whites and instead adopting a cursive "Rangers" script.

In preparation for their first season at Globe Life Field, the Rangers also introduced these powder blue uniforms, which they wear for Sunday home games.

The jerseys feature the Texas state flag patch, which is the best part of the Rangers' uniform set, which ranked 23rd on our preseason countdown.

    Houston Astros v Texas Rangers

If there's an area where these could stand to improve, it would be getting a powder blue batting helmet that matches the caps.

The primary blue batting helmets don't look bad with it, but a matching batting helmet would really push this look over the top.

    4. Toronto Blue Jays

    5 of 8
World Series - Los Angeles Dodgers v Toronto Blue Jays - Game 6

As noted, the Blue Jays introduced this iteration of their powder blue uniforms in 2020. They got their most national exposure to date this fall, with the eventual American League champions wearing powder blue in six of their final 12 games, doing so both at home and on the road.

These are a particularly loud shade of powder blue, which really pops with the contrast of the darker shade of blue featured on the cap and across the script. The cap having a powder blue brim does make the uniform look even better than the all-navy batting helmet:

The Blue Jays have arguably the greatest front in sports, and a top third of the league uniform kit (one that would be even higher if the green TD Bank ad patch wasn't such an eyesore). This past postseason, the powder blues might have become the most popular threads for Canada's team.

    3. Kansas City Royals

    6 of 8
Kansas City Royals v Los Angeles Angels

The Royals made one of the best uniform decisions of the 2025 season, bringing back the matching powder blue pants to go with their powder blue tops, a look they donned regularly both at home and on the road this past year.

From 1973-1991, this had been the primary look for Kansas City on the road. In recent years, it had worn the powder blue tops with white pants, which it still did on occasion in 2025. The powder blue jerseys with white pants is a nice look, but not nearly as good as powder blue on powder blue.

The chef's kiss is the tri-colored cap/batting helmet that the Royals have now paired with the alternates:

Kansas City Royals v Los Angeles Angels

There's an argument to be made that they should just restore these as their primary road uniforms. However, powder blue on powder blue looks great for them on both the road and at Kauffman Stadium.

    2. Philadelphia Phillies

    7 of 8
Division Series - Philadelphia Phillies v Los Angeles Dodgers - Game 3

Outside of their brutal City Connect uniforms, the Phillies have a really strong set of threads. By far the most popular, though, are their powder blue and maroon throwbacks.

The Phillies wore these powder blue uniforms as their primary road jerseys from 1972-1988. They returned in 2018 as a home alternate that's worn on Thursdays at Citizens Bank Park. The only problem is the Phillies only played seven Thursday home games in 2025, and going 6-1 in the powder blues left everyone wanting more.

So, out of the blue (pun intended), the Phillies showed up to Dodger Stadium and wore the powder blue uniforms for Games 3 and 4 of the NLDS. It didn't allow them to climb out of a 2-0 hole against the eventual World Series champions, but it did make you wonder about future possibilities.

The Phillies have five uniforms currently, and four of them—the powder blues, City Connect, red pinstripes and creams—are home jerseys. So they wound up wearing their gray road jerseys 81 times.

The gray jerseys are pretty good, particularly when red long sleeves are worn under them, but the Phillies need a road alternate. Maybe the NLDS was an indication that the powder blues could be that alternate, in addition to being worn for Thursday home games.

    Atlanta Braves v Philadelphia Phillies

One obstacle is that if the Phillies wear powder blue jerseys on the road, they have to pack an entire second set of hats, pants and socks. Teams don't love doing that. Maybe a workaround would be that some road trips the Phillies could wear gray, and others they could rock the powder blues.

In any event, the fans—and not just in Philly—want to see more than seven powder blue games moving forward.

    1. St. Louis Cardinals

    8 of 8
St. Louis Cardinals v Cincinnati Reds

The Cardinals perched on a bat is one of the most iconic looks baseball has to offer, which is why St. Louis' uniform set checked in as the second-best on B/R's 2025 countdown.

St. Louis wore powder blue as its primary road uniforms from 1976-1984. They returned as a road alternate in 2019, with the Cardinals rocking powder blue for every Saturday road game.

There is something cool about the fact that the Cardinals still wear what was a road uniform exclusively for away games, even though it would no doubt be popular if they occasionally mixed them in at home like some of the other teams on this list have.

St. Louis Cardinals v Cleveland Guardians

Also cool is how the old-school socks look with St. Louis' powder blue uniforms, as pictured above on Miles Mikolas.

There are probably some other more popular powder blues, but for our money, these are as good as it gets.
