Claressa Shields Offers to Train Sydney Sweeney for Boxing Fight, 'Girl, Call Me'

Adam WellsNov 8, 2025

Sydney Sweeney has already learned some boxing techniques for her role in Christy, but the Emmy-nominated actress has a standing offer to get lessons from arguably the greatest women's boxer of all-time.

Claressa Shields told TMZ Sports that if Sweeney is serious about potentially doing a charity boxing match, she would be available to help her train for it.

"If she needs some help training, girl, call me! I give you some G.W.O.A.T. tips," said Shields.

Sweeney is currently making the media rounds to promote Christy, in which she stars as former WBC female super welterweight champion Christy Martin.

The 28-year-old told David Evans of Sportscasting that the process of making the movie and learning to box that she has at least explored the possibility of setting up a boxing match for charity.

"Christy said she'd sign me up," Sweeney said. "So, this isn't as hypothetical as you actually think it is. Yeah, I'd totally do a charity bout, that'd be so sick."

Grant Roberts, who trained Sweeney prior to filming, told Taryn Ryder of Yahoo that the actress went through 12 weeks of training to prep for the role. The focus was both on building her technique as a boxer to look authentic and add muscle to more closely resemble Martin's physique.

In addition to learning boxing fundamentals, Sweeney has also trained in mixed martial arts and took part in her first competition at the age of 18.

Even with all of that combat training on her resume, Sweeney could probably learn a lot more if she took Shields up on her offer.

Shields is 17-0 since turning pro in 2016 after she won back-to-back Olympic gold medals. The Michigan native has won 15 major world titles in four different weight classes. She won the undisputed heavyweight championship in February with a unanimous decision victory over Danielle Perkins.
