The matchup came two days after Ovechkin became the first player in NHL history to score 900 career goals during the Capitals' Wednesday victory over the visiting St. Louis Blues.
Malkin and Penguins captain Sidney Crosby previously celebrated Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goalscoring record with his 895th goal last April by gifting him a Rolex.
Ovechkin and Malkin have been NHL rivals since they were selected by the Capitals and Penguins with the respective first and second picks of the 2004 draft.
The two have previously skated on the same team while representing Russia during three Winter Olympics, most recently in Sochi during the 2014 Games.
Neither will be skating in the 2026 Milan Olympics, however, following the International Olympic Committee's decision to make Russia ineligible for team sports.
