Giants' Graham Gano Reveals He Gets Death Threats 'Every Week' Due to Sports Betting
New York Giants kicker Graham Gano told reporters he has received death threats every week after since sports betting was legalized in the United States.
"I hear everyone else's frustration -- media, fans. Shoot, ever since sports betting started happening, I get people telling me to kill myself every week," Gano said, per ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "'Cause I'll hit a kick that loses them money. I'll miss a kick and it loses them money. It was the other day that someone told me to get cancer and die. I mean, that stuff is part of it.
"Just playing this long, you're used to it by now. But with that being said, I see everyone's frustration. And I'm frustrated too. I just want to play ball. Just constantly not being able to is tough. Doing everything I can to try to come back and play. That is my hope."
Gano also spoke about how he deals with death wishes.
Obviously, these are inexcusable and heinous acts that no athlete should ever have to deal with.
In addition, Gano is also dealing with an especially tough road of late due to numerous injuries over the past three years that have kept him off the field.
In 2023, Gano suffered a season-ending knee injury that required surgery and forced him to miss the final nine games of the year. He notably played hurt during a 13-10 overtime loss to the New York Jets on Oct. 29.
Gano has played 15 of a possible 26 games in 2024 and 2025. He suffered a hamstring injury while making a tackle on the opening kickoff in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders and missed the next seven games. This season, Gano missed four games with a groin injury. He's been back for the past two weeks but has not practiced this week with a herniated disc in his neck.
Gano missed a 45-yard field goal late in the first half during his team's 34-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday. He was dealing with the latest injury during that matchup.
The 38-year-old Gano obviously wants to be out there and perform to the level he's shown as a Giant in the past. The 16-year veteran was incredibly consistent over his first three years (2020-2022) with the team, making 89-of-97 field goals (91.8 percent).
Unfortunately, Gano hasn't been able to be out there consistently of late, but he obviously cares and wants to contribute.
Sadly, he's dealing with serious and completely unnecessary threats alongside the injury problems, making for an incredibly difficult and trying situation.
