Gamers will have to wait a bit longer for one of the most highly anticipated releases in recent memory.

On Thursday, Rockstar Games announced that the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI has been pushed back to Nov. 19, 2026. The company apologized to fans and said the extra time will "allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve."

Buzz has been building for the sixth installment of the famed video game series since a trailer was released in December 2023. It was initially believed that Grand Theft Auto VI would be released sometime this year, but Rockstar announced in May that the release date would be May 26, 2026. The company was apologetic back then, as well.

"We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game," Rockstar said at the time. "With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve."

Next year's release will mark the first new Grand Theft Auto game since 2013. The game will be available for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Fans have waited over a decade for a new edition, so while Thursday's announcement will be disappointing, they won't mind waiting a few more months as the game is perfected.
