Mario Suarez to Fiorentina: Latest Transfer Details, Comments, Reaction
Atletico Madrid announced an agreement with Fiorentina for the sale of Mario Suarez on Wednesday. The defensive midfielder joins the Serie A side after a five-season stint with the Colchoneros.
The Spanish side's official site confirmed a deal had been struck.
"Mario Suarez will play in Fiorentina," the statement read. "The agreement between the clubs is complete and will be formalized in the next few hours. The midfielder has traveled with permission from the club to join the Italian club's discipline."
Suarez, 28, came through the youth ranks at Atletico Madrid and started his senior career with the club before a move to Mallorca. He eventually returned to Vicente Calderon Stadium and developed into a highly reliable midfield option.
He made 178 appearances across all competitions over the past five years, including 34 last term. He scored just five goals over that span, showcasing his limited attacking involvement, but his impact is felt in the defensive third and by helping jump-start counterattacks.
Suarez is just the latest high-profile exit in what's become a busy summer for the Colchoneros. Arda Turan, Mario Mandzukic, Toby Alderweireld and Miranda have also exited while Jackson Martinez headlines the group of incoming players.
Given the high rate of squad turnover this offseason, it will take awhile before the Atletico lineup for next term becomes more clear. Gabi remains in defensive midfield, but whether they move somebody else alongside him or utilize a more attack-minded formation is to be determined.
As for Suarez, he should immediately step into a prominent role for Fiorentina. He's not a flashy player, but he's highly effective in thwarting opposition attacks when in top form.
