Don Mattingly Reportedly Leaves Blue Jays amid Expiring Contract, Not Retiring

Adam WellsNov 6, 2025

After making it to his first World Series in 36 MLB seasons between playing and coaching, Don Mattingly is leaving his position as bench coach with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post and MLB Network, Mattingly is leaving the organization "on great terms" with his contract set to expire.

Heyman added that Mattingly has no intention of retiring and that he is "open to the right job" with another club.

The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres are the only two teams that have yet to fill their vacant managerial positions. Colorado is also still searching for a new president of baseball operations.

A Nov. 3 report from Troy Renck of The Denver Post noted the Rockies have effectively restarted their search for a president of baseball operations after Matt Forman and Amiel Sawdaye, two finalists for the job, were no longer in the mix for the position.

Mattingly would seem better suited to a job in the dugout as opposed to the front office since he has never done the latter. The 64-year-old has plenty of experience as a coach and manager, having spent the past 22 seasons in one of those roles.

There is no indication at this point that Mattingly has interviewed with either the Rockies or Padres about their managerial job.

The Blue Jays hired Mattingly as their bench coach in November 2022, soon after John Schneider was named the full-time manager. Schneider had no managerial experience prior to getting the job, so Mattingly was brought into ease his transition.

Toronto's run to the World Series this season marked the first time Mattingly has ever been in the Fall Classic. He played 14 seasons with the New York Yankees from 1982 to '95.

Mattingly spent 12 seasons as a manager from 2011 to '22 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins. He went 446-363 with four playoff appearances between the two stops.
