Young Guns Take On Olympic Superstars

As the London Olympics fades into distant memory, a new breed of talent is ready to take on the heroes of 2012.

Friday sees the return of Usain Bolt to London, where the charismatic sprinter achieved one of the greatest accomplishments of his career. But he will be forced to produce his best form as the new stars of the event push him to the limit.

Bolt will face a threat from British diamond Chijindu Ujah, who became only the fifth British sprinter to run sub-10 seconds, last year.

The 21-year-old is one of the most decorated youth runners in world athletics, and he is now making a splash on the senior circuit.

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - JULY 05: Chijindu Ujah of Enfield and Haringey celebrates after winning the men's 100m final on day three of the Sainsbury's British Championships at Birmingham Alexander Stadium on July 5, 2015 in Birmingham, England. (Photo by Be

The Londoner will be running in front of an expectant home city crowd, who will be urging him to beat his personal best of 9.96—just to stay in touch with the rapid Bolt.

World and European indoor champion Richard Kilty will also be providing fierce competition, with the 100 metres promising to be the first day's key event.

The 100 metres has endured much controversy in recent times—with top sprinters serving doping suspensions—but the Telegraph's Paul Hayward believes Bolt is the man to save the credibility of the event:

"

If you think the Tour de France is one long pharmaceutical seminar, consider the current 100m, which Usain Bolt will endeavour to “save” all over again when he steps up his preparations for the World Championships in Beijing next month at the London 2012 Anniversary Games on Friday night.

...

So, the simplest narrative is: Bolt as redeemer, Bolt as clean runner in a world of performance enhancing drugs. As with Chris Froome on the Tour, the starting point of most fans is to hope for authenticity but not assume it: to enjoy until a solid reason comes along to stop enjoying it and bury head in hands.

"

Jessica Ennis-Hill also returns to the venue of her greatest night as she competes in the 100-metre hurdles and the long jump.

Ennis-Hill stars on Saturday against young British rival Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the long jump, and will then additionally feature in the 200-metre sprint.

Johnson-Thompson is the heir apparent to the Olympic champion, with the 22-year-old challenging Ennis-Hill's supremacy in the heptathlon.

The young athletes on show are the reason to get excited about this meeting, taking on the superstars of recent years.

Track and field fans will savour the chance to see their heroes take on the most prodigious talent on the circuit, hoping to witness the birth of new champions to cheer for at future Olympic Games.

Ujah and Johnson-Thompson are the potential next Olympic champions of British athletics, and the Anniversary Games gives them a chance to pit their skills against the cornerstone athletes of their disciplines.
