Undertaker's Return for WWE SummerSlam 2015 Eerily Similar to Previous Feuds

Sebastian MaldonadoJul 22, 2015

The Undertaker returns not for competition but for vengeance!

He made a surprise appearance by interrupting WWE Battleground’s main event between Brock Lesnar and WWE champion Seth Rollins. Lesnar, who had finished his destruction of Rollins with an F-5, made the cover, seemingly completing his revenge against Rollins for WrestleMania 31.

Suddenly, the lights went out. A gong sounded in St. Louis. When the second one hit, the lights came back on with The Undertaker staring a hole into Lesnar.

His appearance stunned Lesnar. It floored Paul Heyman. The crowd roared in jubilation over the Deadman’s return.

Undertaker kicked Lesnar between the legs. He was furious with the Beast and chokeslammed him to the ground.

Undertaker wasn’t done. He picked up Lesnar for two Tombstone Piledrivers.

'Taker convincingly revealed his motivation for his actions the next night on Raw. He referred to himself as “cold-blooded” and explained how he grew tired of Lesnar and Heyman gloating over ending his 21-0 streak at WrestleMania.

The aftermath at Battleground promoted Triple H to book Lesnar and 'Taker for a match at SummerSlam, August 23.

Undertaker wants revenge. The synergy of the two highly strung, gargantuan fighters culminated in a brawl on Raw resulting in the entire locker room and security staff trying to separate them.

The roster succeeded, but the damage has been done.

It’s new and fresh to see something as strong as this feud reoccurring once again. It’s reminiscent of their wars in 2002-03, though that’s not what appears similar.

Undertaker’s return for WWE SummerSlam is eerily familiar.

The intense encounters aren’t familiar. It’s the timing. It took Undertaker nearly 17 months to exact his revenge on Lesnar, which, in regard to the length of time, is not uncommon in the WWE.

After the Ultimate Warrior defeated the Macho Man Randy Savage at WrestleMania VII, they met the next year at SummerSlam 1992. When Razor Ramon defeated Shawn Michaels in a Ladder match at WrestleMania X, they fought the next year at SummerSlam 1995 in another Ladder match.

See the trend here?

WWE must love making fans wait for another encounter. Yet it shows that fans will wait for things they never knew they wanted.

Rematches put fans in the seats, especially those bouts that make the first one memorable.

Warrior vs. Savage was a retirement match, with Warrior coming out victorious. Ramon defeated Michaels in the first match to unify the intercontinental title. Fast-forward to WrestleMania 30, where Lesnar ended Undertaker’s winning streak.

Warrior won the rematch by count-out. Michaels retained his intercontinental title in his rematch. If history plays a factor, then 'Taker getting his revenge is a tossup.

That’s not the only thing that makes this familiar. Ironically enough, this also makes this feud very different.

It was The Undertaker who sought a rematch against Triple H a year after Triple H nearly crippled him at WrestleMania 27. Despite seeking retribution, Undertaker won that encounter.

Perhaps the eerie thing about this is Undertaker is playing the role of Shawn Michaels. Granted, these are two different people. But here’s where the similarities lie.

'Taker and Michaels waged a classic at WrestleMania 25 before the former earned the victory. The next year saw 'Taker defend the world heavyweight title at Elimination Chamber. Michaels emerged from under the structure and cost 'Taker the title. This led to 'Taker vs. Michaels Part II at WrestleMania 26.

What’s old is new again. Sometimes taking a familiar road is the best way to achieve a goal. Frankly, it could become reality when analyzing the road to this explosive SummerSlam rematch.

Undertaker returning to face Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam is eerily familiar. Truthfully, it shows an old philosophy working perfectly for this main event: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
