Orioles vs. Yankees Live Blog: Instant Updates and Analysis

John LundJul 21, 2015

The Baltimore Orioles headed to the Bronx to face the New York Yankees on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. ET on WPIX-TV in the first of a three-game series.

The Yankees had a four-game lead over the O's in the American League East and had won nine of their last 13 games after edging out the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, 2-1. New York took three of four from Baltimore when the two teams last met at Yankee Stadium in May.

Nathan Eovaldi looked for his 10th win of the season for New York while Wei-Yin Chen took the hill for Baltimore. Chen entered the game with a 2.78 ERA and was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA against the Yankees this year.

It was the Yankees taking the early lead, using small ball to plate the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Alex Rodriguez. After the O's went down in order in the top of the second, a brief rain delay halted the game for 15 minutes but didn't have too much of an impact.

Chase Headley doubled to score Brian McCann in the bottom of the second to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

New York would hold the O's in check until the sixth. Eovaldi's control would slowly begin to falter and Baltimore tied the score with a couple of timely singles.

The Yankees answered in the bottom of the frame however, as place-starter Brendan Ryan laced an RBI double down the left field like to give New York a 3-2 lead.

That would end up being enough for the Yankees, who's bullpen managed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Yankees now move five games ahead of the Orioles for first place of the AL East. Some final numbers:

Yankees: Teixeira, Young and Headley with two hits. Healey and Ryan had RBI doubles.

Orioles: Wieters and Hardy both singled and drove in a run.

Justin Wilson (3-0) picks up the win, while Wei-Yin Chen (4-6) suffers the loss. The Yankees improve to 51-41 and the Orioles drop to 46-46.
