After Tuesday's deal, the Cowboys owned five picks in the 2026 NFL draft.

Dallas had the financial flexibility to acquire Williams, as it boasts just under $20.6 million in cap space (via Spotrac).

The Cowboys will still have at least one 2027 first-round pick, as they previously acquired a 2027 first-round choice after trading star pass-rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 28.

ESPN's Todd Archer reported that Dallas held discussions with New York surrounding a swap of Williams and Parsons heading into the 2025 season, but were told that the Jets "did not have the resources" to pay Parsons following a potential deal.

Now, the Cowboys will be hoping that Williams can provide a boost to a defense that has struggled mightily without Parsons.

Dallas has given up 30.8 points and 397.4 yards per game this season, with both averages representing the second-worst marks in the NFL. The defensive struggles have played a large role in the team's 3-5-1 record in 2025.

Williams should immediately be an impactful addition to the Cowboys' defensive front, as he's earned Pro Bowl honors in each of the past three seasons while racking up 23.5 sacks over that span.

This year, he's recorded 32 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, three quarterback hits and one sack through eight games.
