Kyler Murray To Remain Cardinals QB 1 Ahead of Brissett, HC Says, 'Nothing's Changed'

Joseph ZuckerNov 4, 2025

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon isn't entertaining any sort of quarterback controversy after backup Jacoby Brissett led the team to a 27-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.

Gannon offered a succinct response when asked whether Kyler Murray will resume his starting duties once he returns from a foot injury:

While the Cardinals are only 1-2 with Brissett under center this year, his production far outpaces that of Murray. He has thrown for 860 yards, six touchdowns and one interception with a 103.4 passer rating.

Against the Cowboys, Brissett was 21-of-31 for 261 yards and two scores through the air.

Murray, by contrast, is averaging a career-low 192.4 passing yards per game, and he has as many passing touchdowns as Brissett across two more starts.

There's no getting around the fact the two-time Pro Bowler, when healthy, was not performing at the level required of a quarterback earning an average salary of $46.1 million.

The fans who are starting to argue Brissett is a better option under center might be prisoners of the moment, however.

It's not uncommon for backup quarterbacks to go on a heater.

The football world was once gripped by "Minshew Mania." Back in 2023, the Cardinals looked foolish for trading Joshua Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings after he engineered back-to-back wins. Joe Flacco's career at this point is basically him being the NFL version of Jon Taffer where he rescues one offense after another.

Sooner or later, backups typically regress to their actual level.

Arizona plays the Seattle Seahawks in Week 10. Seattle is tied for fourth in interceptions (nine) and ranks fifth in opponent QB rating (83.6). It could be a tricky matchup for the Cardinals and the game when the bubble bursts for Brissett if he's still filling in for Murray.
