NFL Exec Bashes Bills' Roster, 'Not Impressive Talent-Wise But… Very Well-Coached'

Doric SamNov 3, 2025

After the Buffalo Bills defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 28-21 on Sunday, some around the NFL reportedly feel that this could be the year they finally break through, despite their roster shortcomings.

The Athletic's Mike Sando spoke to an executive from a Bills opponent who was critical of Buffalo's talent level but had praise for how head coach Sean McDermott has managed to get the best out of his players.

"Buffalo is not impressive talent-wise, but they are very well-coached," the exec said. "My gut just tells me that Buffalo is going to break through this year. They have been pretty unlucky to lose games three of the past four years against the Chiefs (in the playoffs). Those could have gone either way. Eventually, those bounce the other way, so I think they will be fine."

Buffalo has now won five straight regular-season meetings against Kansas City, though the team is 0-4 against the reigning AFC champion in the playoffs dating back to 2020.

Sunday's win against the Chiefs didn't require any heroics from Bills star quarterback Josh Allen, who threw for 273 yards and a touchdown on 23-of-26 passing and added two rushing scores. He completed passes to 10 different receivers in the game.

After the win, Allen praised the "selflessness" of his teammates, explaining that Buffalo's success has been driven by everyone embracing a team-first mindset.

"That goes back to the mantra we've tried to adopt here: Everybody eats—do your job and you're going to have some opportunities to make some plays," Allen said, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "It's crazy because you wish you could get everybody as many targets as possible but when you have guys constantly doing the right thing, sometimes, hey, you're only going to get two opportunities today."

Allen continued: "But I'm looking at these numbers and I think of Elijah Moore, he had one target for 28 yards, on a big second-and-8 that got us down in scoring position. Curtis Samuel, one catch for six yards that got us an opportunity to get to a third-down play that we really like early on, which we scored on the next play. It all adds up and when guys have that feeling of, any opportunity or any down it could be their chance to get the ball here, that's when you're gonna have some pretty good success."

The Bills (6-2) will be looking to extend their win streak to three straight games when they visit the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins (2-7) next Sunday.
