Brian described the incident from his perspective when speaking to reporters on Friday.
"I don't know if the owl was looking for the snakes (that recently bit his dogs) or what was going on, but it's actually the story of a coach's wife," Schottenheimer said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. "So I'm in game plan meetings last night doing some red zone stuff and I leave the meeting about 10 o'clock and I go back to my phone, and I literally had 72 text messages on my phone. Seventy-two. I'm a popular guy, so that's nothing abnormal.
"But it literally started with a text from my son to his mother saying, 'There's a big hawk-sized bird in here,' and I began to look down and there was an owl. My son was doing some work and he had the sliders open and all of a sudden an owl came (into the house)."
He ended up staying at the family's condo for the night before the owl was eventually removed by animal control.
It's been an eventful season for the Schottenheimer household off the field, as snakes bit two of his dogs earlier in the year.
The Cowboys were eventually able to secure a victory over the New York Giants following the first animal encounter, leading to the coach joking about becoming superstitious if Dallas can secure another win on Monday.
"I think we won when we had the snake issue, so that's probably a good omen," Schottenheimer said, per Machota. "I'll put an elephant in my garage if I have to next. If that's what it takes to win, I'll do it."
The Cowboys sit at No. 2 in the NFC East standings with a 3-4-1 record during Schottenheimer's first year patrolling the sidelines.
