Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Filipe Luis, Abdul Baba Rahman Rumours

Rory MarsdenJul 20, 2015

Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal to sell Brazilian left-back Filipe Luis back to Atletico Madrid just a year after he joined the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Luis joined the Blues last summer from Atleti for £15.8 million, but he was used only sparingly by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho—he made nine starts in last season's Premier League, per WhoScored.com—as he was kept out of the side by Cesar Azpilicueta.

As a result, it is now being reported that Atletico and Chelsea have agreed a deal that will see the 29-year-old return to the Vicente Calderon Stadium for around £11 million, potentially rising to £15 million, per Darren Lewis in the Mirror.

According to Steve Brenner in the Guardian, Mourinho refused a potential loan offer initially, but he is happy to let Luis go as long as Chelsea recoup most or all of the money they paid for him in the first place.

It seems something of an oddity that a player of Luis' calibre has barely been given a chance at Chelsea, and Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe questioned Mourinho's handling of the situation:

However, the suggested resolution is seemingly good for all parties, and the Blues already have their eyes set on a replacement, who can provide stiff competition for Azpilicueta.

Brenner reports that Augsburg left-back Abdul Baba Rahman is being targeted by the Blues, and he is valued at £17 million.

The highly-rated 21-year-old made 29 appearances in the Bundesliga last season and is credited as both a force in attack as well as solid defensively, per WhoScored.

A long-term prospect who could be at Chelsea for years to come, the Ghanaian would be a good purchase for the Blues.

As noted by Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson, Mourinho does not need to make wholesale changes to an already excellent side:

But by bringing in Rahman he would have replaced Luis without spending too much money, and improved the future prospects of his back line.
