NBA Summer League 2015: Top Moments from Suns vs. Spurs Championship

Brian MaziqueJul 21, 2015

The San Antonio Spurs are champions again.

This time, the league's exemplary franchise captured the Las Vegas Summer League championship with a 93-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns. It's not the NBA title Tim Duncan and Co. have become accustomed to, but it's a coronation nonetheless.

This title also has an important detail attached to it. The Spurs were led by head coach Becky Hammon, the first woman to ever coach an NBA Summer League squad.

The Spurs' official Twitter account congratulated Hammon and her team:

The young Spurs were a decorated bunch throughout the summer league. Second-year forward Kyle Anderson won the summer league MVP, while Jonathon Simmons was MVP of the championship game. Simmons led the team in scoring with 23 points, and Treveon Graham had 22.

Early in the first quarter, Darion Atkins awesome and-one tip in of Anderson's miss kept the Spurs in control:

One of the most spectacular buckets Simmons scored was this alley-oop slam on a pass from Anderson:

It was one of four assists Anderson had in the game, but it wasn't his prettiest pass. That came on this behind-the-back feed from the low post to a cutting Shannon Scott.

The Spurs trailed by six at the end of the first quarter, but they put together a strong second quarter to draw even by halftime. The Suns did their best to try to seize control of the game. Mike James scored a game-high 32 points for the Suns, but it wasn't enough.

None of James' teammates were able to make more than 50 percent of their shots from the field. You can see some of James' work in this full highlight reel of the game:

While Anderson and Simmons excelled, the person most people will be talking about is Hammon. Per Ben Golliver of SI.com, here's what Hammon had to say about her team's victory:

She's been a trailblazer in the NBA as the first full-time female assistant. Hammon had already made more history simply by coaching the Spurs, but she took it to the next level by winning it all.

It's inevitable that Hammon will become a serious candidate for a regular-season head-coaching vacancy in the near future.
