Per WKBW in Buffalo, Bishop Michael Fisher returned home Tuesday after meeting with Pope Leo "to seek guidance on the Diocese of Buffalo's ongoing bankruptcy proceedings and parish restructuring efforts."
The Bills jersey presented to Pope Leo was emblazoned with the No. 14 to represent the XIV in Pope Leo XIV.
Prior to the meaning of the No. 14 jersey getting revealed, some jokingly speculated that Pope Leo XIV was given a jersey of current Bills wide receiver Tyrell Shavers or one of the host of former Bills who wore No. 14, such as Stefon Diggs, Sammy Watkins or Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Pope Leo XIV has a connection to American football unlike any previous pope since he is the first pope ever born in the United States.
The 70-year-old from Chicago, who was born Robert Francis Prevost, was elevated from cardinal-bishop to pope on May 8 following the death of Pope Francis.
Pope Leo is known to be a baseball fan who supports his hometown Chicago White Sox.
In fact, he was in attendance at Game 1 of the 2005 World Series. The White Sox went on to sweep the Houston Astros in that series, giving them their first World Series title since 1917.
If Pope Leo follows the NFL, it can perhaps be assumed that he is primarily a Chicago Bears fan, but he graciously accepted the Bills jersey nonetheless.
The 5-2 Bills would undoubtedly welcome Pope Leo's support this weekend, as they are set to host the 5-3 Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in a matchup that could have a huge impact on the AFC playoff picture and the battle for the No. 1 seed.
