Jets' Justin Fields Reveals He Cried in a Closet After 'Encouraging' Texts from Family

Andrew PetersOct 26, 2025

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields had one of his lowest moments of the season last week when he was benched halfway through a loss to the Carolina Panthers.

But what came from that moment could help him hit the reset button going into the rest of the year.

Fields revealed on Sunday that the encouraging texts he received this week left him emotional, and he responded by leading the Jets to their first win of the season.

"I'm going to get pretty vulnerable right here," he said. "This week, I found myself in my closet crying on the ground, lying down. Not because of the hardships, not because of the troubles. I felt like I was built to handle that and I was put in place to handle this situation, but in that moment when I was talking to my best friend on how hard it was and just not wavering faith-wise.

"I got a text from my sister and my step mom, and it was just an encouraging text... It was just a sign from God for me to keep going and that I'm in the right place. Yesterday I was just praying over and over and over again, just one win."

Fields had one of his best games of the season on Sunday, throwing for 244 yards and a touchdown in a 39-38 win over the Bengals. His performance followed a game in which he had just 46 yards before being benched.

The Jets, now 1-7 on the year, are still far from being playoff contenders, and Fields still has plenty of room for growth, but it seems he took some steps forward this week.
