Chargers Showcase Navy Throwback Uniforms in Photos, Videos for TNF vs. Vikings
The Los Angeles Chargers debuted some new threads for their Thursday Night Football contest against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Bolts are rocking navy blue uniforms as an homage to some of the jerseys they wore in the 1990s to early 2000s.
According to the Chargers' website, the jerseys are named the "Super Chargers" uniform. They're reminiscent of the threads the team wore during some of the best years of their franchise's history, which featured a Super Bowl appearance and a handful of AFC West titles.
Some notable players from that era include running back LaDainian Tomlinson, tight end Antonio Gates and Phillip Rivers. Head coach Jim Harbaugh also spent a pair of seasons wearing the jerseys when he was a member of the team from 1999 to 2000.
Gates, who racked up 11,841 yards and 116 touchdowns with the Chargers, approves of the alternate uniforms.
"I love the navy. That was my favorite one," Gates said. "And once I saw this new version, I said, 'Yeah, I definitely would have scored a few touchdowns wearing that.' I love that uniform. I wish I could play in it again."
Tomlinson, who won an MVP with the Chargers, is also a fan.
"If you think about the Chargers and the brand and the colors — and what that means — I think most people my age would identify with the navy blue and the lightning bolt," he said. "When you saw that jersey, more than likely you were in Qualcomm Stadium. And, more than likely, if you were on the other team in that era you were leaving with a loss."
Los Angeles will also wear its alternates in Week 13 when it faces the Las Vegas Raiders.
