CM Punk Beats Jey Uso to Win WWE World Title After Seth Rollins' Injury
CM Punk beat Jey Uso at Saturday Night's Main Event to win the vacant World Heavyweight Championship.
Punk hit Uso with his signature Go to Sleep finisher for the win.
On the Oct. 13 episode of Raw, Punk won a Triple Threat match against Uso and LA Knight to earn a world title match against Seth Rollins at SNME, but an injury resulted in a shakeup.
During his Crown Jewel Championship match against Cody Rhodes at the Crown Jewel premium live event last month, Rollins appeared to suffer an arm or shoulder injury.
Two nights later on Raw, a shocking turn of events occurred when Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed turned on Rollins and imploded The Vision. Breakker hit him with a spear out of nowhere, and Reed followed up with a Tsunami, prompting Paul Heyman to hold up the arms of Breakker and Reed in triumph.
The next week on Raw, general manager Adam Pearce said that the match against Rhodes and subsequent beatdown at the hands of Breakker and Reed left Rollins medically disqualified and in need of surgery.
That was a case of art imitating life, as Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t WrestlePurists) reported that Rollins legitimately required surgery and would be out for "months," although the exact timeline for his return remains unclear.
As a result, Pearce stripped Rollins of the world heavyweight title and held a battle royal to determine who would face Punk for the vacant championship at Saturday Night's Main Event.
Jey prevailed in the star-studded match, setting up a clash between a pair of former world heavyweight champs.
At WrestleMania 41, Jey became world heavyweight champion for the first time by beating Gunther, but he dropped it back to The Ring General about two months later.
Punk then beat Gunther for the championship at SummerSlam, however, his reign lasted only a few minutes before Rollins successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to win it.
By beating Uso at Saturday Night's Main Event, Punk erased the pain of that night at SummerSlam and became a world champion for the seventh time in his illustrious WWE career.
