Jahmyr Gibbs Said 'Oh S--t' on 78-Yard TD, Career Night 'Kinda Special' with 218 Yards

Mike ChiariOct 21, 2025

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs reflected on his performance following a career night in a 24-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday.

The third-year player out of Alabama finished Monday's game with 136 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, plus another 82 yards on three receptions, giving him 218 total yards on the night.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Gibbs expressed the importance of eclipsing the 200-yard mark, saying, "This was my first 200-yard output, so yeah, it's kinda special."

The biggest play of the game was Gibbs' 78-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter, which extended the Detroit lead to 14-0.

Gibbs credited his offensive line for paving the way, saying, "It was just black. All I saw was black jerseys. I was like, 'Oh, s--t' and I just ran straight."

Per ESPN Research (h/t ESPN's Eric Woodyard), Gibbs' 218 yards from scrimmage on Monday were the most by a Lions player in a single game since Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson racked up 329 yards in 2013.

That is no small feat given the fact that the Lions have been an offensive juggernaut in recent years, led by Gibbs, quarterback Jared Goff, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, running back David Montgomery and tight end Sam LaPorta.

Although Gibbs often splits carries with Montgomery in the Detroit backfield, he is still putting up another huge statistical season.

Through seven games, Gibbs is fifth in the NFL with 526 rushing yards, tied for third with six rushing touchdowns and fifth in total yards from scrimmage with 720.

Gibbs was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons, and if he remains on his current pace, a third Pro Bowl nod is in his future, plus a First Team All-Pro selection is possible.

With so much parity across the league, the NFC and the NFL as a whole feel like they are truly up for grabs this season.

By virtue of their win on Monday, the Lions improved to 5-2, which is tied for the best record in the NFC behind only the 4-1-1 Green Bay Packers.

Gibbs and the offense have been the driving force behind the Lions' success, as they rank third in the league in scoring with 30.7 points per game. If Detroit goes the distance and reaches the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history, it will likely be on the back of that dynamic offense.
