Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Thomas Muller, Jasper Cillessen Rumours

Manchester United are looking to continue their excellent summer transfer window with two or three more signings, depending on whether David De Gea remains at Old Trafford.

Regardless of the Spaniard's future, a striker is certainly on Louis van Gaal's wish list.

After the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao, and with Javier Hernandez likely to leave, United have just one senior striker in Wayne Rooney.

According to John Richardson of the Express, Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller is one of the Red Devils' targets.

The German international is a phenomenal talent, whose incisive forward play and creativity would see him thrive at Old Trafford.

Muller scored 21 goals and created a further 13 in all competitions last season, and as WhoScored noted, his creative contribution is almost unrivalled in the Bundesliga:

Per Richardson's report, Van Gaal is targeting a title challenge next season with third place being the bare minimum. He said:

"

We are not finished yet [over spending]. As I have said many times we need a balance in the selection. I think we need to improve at least two positions and we shall do that.

You always have to improve yourselves. Last season we were fourth and that was not good enough.

We have to finish this season at least in the top three because we have to play a match to qualify for the Champions League and that is not so easy.

"

Muller would undoubtedly fit the bill, but as Bleacher Report's Bundesliga expert Clark Whitney noted, Bayern are unlikely to sell the forward:

Unless United are willing to splash out an incredible amount of Muller, they will likely be forced to look elsewhere to bolster their attacking options.

Van Gaal eyes up Jasper Cillessen as De Gea Replacement

Per Richardson's report, should De Gea move to Real Madrid, Jasper Cillessen would be subject to a £20 million bid from United.

Cillessen has claimed he is happy at Ajax, but he did not rule out a move should a concrete offer come in.

According to Ben McAleer of WhoScored, he said:

I'm very happy here.

I have only heard the rumours so I don't worry about it until I hear something from my agent. If I don't hear something from my agent, I enjoy playing at Ajax. I ask my agent, who also is Memphis Depay's, and he says we don't know anything.

Of course, it's a great club, Manchester United, but I cannot do anything with rumours.

The 26-year-old was the top performer at Ajax last season, according to Squawka, while WhoScored illustrated his propensity for shut-outs. 

The 'keeper boasts outstanding reflexes and agility, while Squawka also noted he maintained an incredible distribution accuracy of 72 per cent last season.

This would fit in with Van Gaal's possession-based game, allowing United to maintain possession of the ball and launch quick counter-attacks from the back.

If De Gea does indeed bow out of Old Trafford this summer, then Cillessen would be an excellent and able replacement.
