Latest 2025 MLB Free Agents Rumors, Predictions Before World Series Bracket

Erik BeastonOct 20, 2025

While the Los Angeles Dodgers await their opponent in the 2025 World Series, teams around MLB continue to prep for the off-season, where several high-profile free agents will be available for them to improve their teams with.

From big swingers like Pete Alonso to renowned third basemen such as Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman, they will field high-money offers to come in and make a team a legitimate playoff and World Series contender in 2026.

Dive deeper into each of their situations with these rumors from the sport's most trusted insiders and find out what the future may hold for them.

Alex Bregman To Opt Out

MLB: OCT 02 AL Wild Card - Red Sox at Yankees

A source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman will opt out of his current deal and test free agency this off-season.

Bregman signed with the Red Sox to a three-year, $120 million contract last off-season, but the former Houston Astro had a player option for 2026 that would allow him to test the free agency market.

He is expected to exercise it and become a free agent for the second time in as many years, meaning the Red Sox will have to pay up, again, if they hope to retain his services.

Feinsand reported the Tigers, Blue Jays, and Mariners would all have interest in Bregman, with Detroit being the early favorite due to the long relationship Bregman had with manager AJ Hinch during their time together in Houston.

Considering the Tigers are a bat or two away from being a legitimate World Series contender, and Bregman would be an immediate upgrade over Andy Ibáñez at the position, that is an intriguing landing spot for the former world champion.

Prediction: Bregman signs with the Tigers

Dodgers Interested in Cubs Slugger

Division Series - Milwaukee Brewers v Chicago Cubs - Game Four

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Dodgers are expected to target Kyle Tucker in free agency this off-season.

The back-to-back NL champions are no strangers to spending in the off-season if they believe a player can help them achieve their goals of continuing their dynasty, so it is not particularly surprising to hear a report linking them to a hotly coveted free agent.

Especially when that free agent collected 133 hits, 73 RBI, and 22 HR, all while combating a hand injury.

If he is healthy and can continue to put the bat on the ball, the Dodgers will not be the only team looking to pry him away from Chicago. The Cubs, though, likely recognize how important he was to their playoff push and how significant he will be moving forward.

While the Dodgers are rarely out-spent, it would be surprising if Chicago did not make a significant push to keep Tucker in the blue and white pinstripes for the foreseeable future.

Prediction: Tucker returns to Chicago

Pete Alonso's Contract Ask

3 of 3
MLB: SEP 28 Mets at Marlins

Pete Alonso wasted no time after the New York Mets' last loss of the season, announcing that he would opt out of his current deal and test free agency.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reported that the slugger is seeking a contract in the range of seven years.

The question is whether he returns to New York or continues his career elsewhere. Considering the Mets played hardball last off-season but Alonso still returned, there are questions about whether the team would reward his good faith, and 126 RBI and 38 home runs, with a new big-money deal this year.

That may depend on whether he is willing to give up first base and slot into the designated hitter spot, with questions about his defensive throwing ability causing concern.

If the Mets do not bring Alonso back, there will be plenty of teams who could benefit from his presence in the lineup. The Philadelphia Phillies are one such team, depending on what happens with impending free agent Kyle Schwarber, as are the Seattle Mariners and San Francsico Giants.

There will always be a place for an incredible offensive presence like Alonso, who can turn a game around with a single swing of the bat. The question is how much of a sticking point remaining at first is for him.

Prediction: Alonso leaves New York, signs elsewhere
