Quinn Ewers Named Tua's Backup over Zach Wilson for Dolphins vs. Gabriel, Browns

Joseph ZuckerOct 19, 2025

The Miami Dolphins are making rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers their backup to Tua Tagovailoa ahead of Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Zach Wilson had been second in the depth chart for Miami's first six contests.

It's too early to read much into the decision by head coach Mike McDaniel.

Tagovailoa caused a stir and subsequently apologized for his candid press conference after a 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Without naming names, he called some teammates to task for their lack of commitment:

The comments didn't go down well when Tagovailoa is supposed to be a locker room leader and has also been a common denominator over the last few years with Miami not meeting expectations.

Some fans will start to connect the dots between that and the Dolphins now adding Ewers to their active game-day squad.

Still, we're talking about one quarterback who's averaging $53.1 million and another who was a seventh-round draft pick. A QB controversy isn't on the horizon.

Benching Tagovailoa for Ewers would be a massive call, one that would have ramifications for Tagovailoa, McDaniel and the Dolphins. There's probably no coming back for Tua and Miami if McDaniel sends the message that he believes Ewers a better option, be it for right now or the future.

The most obvious conclusion here is the most likely one. The coaching staff has seen enough to trust Ewers in an emergency than Wilson.

To anybody who remembers Wilson's three years as a starter for the New York Jets, that won't require a huge leap of faith.
