What is Chuba Hubbard, Rico Dowdle's Fantasy Trade Value amid Split Backfield Rumors?
It might be time to sell high on Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle.
Dowdle ran for 389 yards and a touchdown while starting in place of Chuba Hubbard the last two weeks. With Hubbard on track to play Sunday against the New York Jets, Carolina's backfield is getting murky.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the team "recently has spent time studying and inquiring about how other teams with productive running back tandems have juggled the workload between two backs."
Head coach Dave Canales has remained purposefully vague as well, which is exactly what fantasy football managers don't want to hear.
Particularly with regard to Dowdle, cashing out now might be the smart play if a worthwhile offer can be found.
It was already worth asking how much the last two weeks were instructive as to his production moving forward.
The Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys are two of the four worst teams in terms of rushing yards allowed. A week before Dowdle's big game, the Cowboys saw the New York Jets' Breece Hall average 8.1 yards per carry. The Dolphins followed up their defeat to the Panthers by surrendering 124 yards on the ground to Los Angeles Chargers rookie Kimani Vidal.
Even without Hubbard reentering the picture, Dowdle is a prime regression candidate.
A good running back is hard to find after the first month of the season. Fantasy managers should be discerning when it comes to a Dowdle trade, but it's something that shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.
The same applies to Hubbard, with the added difficulty of knowing the coaching staff saw him as a stronger option out of the gate this season. Is a two-game sample enough to knock the 26-year-old down the depth chart to a meaningful degree?
Hubbard also has a slightly better track record than Dowdle, having served as a primary ball-carrier for a longer period. Between 2023 and 2024, he had 2,097 rushing yards while averaging 4.3 yards per carry.
Schefter reported the Panthers have examined the time shares for the Detroit Lions (Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery) and Seattle Seahawks (Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet) to see how they can utilize Hubbard and Dowdle to good effect.
The latter is probably a better guide for Carolina because neither of its top two backs is as good of a pass-catcher as Gibbs. In that case, it would be bad news for managers with Hubbard and/or Dowdle.
Walker (364 yards and three touchdowns) and Zach Charbonnet (156 yards and three touchdowns) haven't been that good individually this year, and it was the same story in 2024.
Sunday's game for the Panthers will provide some needed clarity. The operative mindset for fantasy managers is to hope for the best and plan for the worst.
