Panthers' Rico Dowdle Says Cowboys Never Made Contract Offer, Talks Future Deal in FA

Andrew PetersOct 18, 2025

Rico Dowdle joined the Carolina Panthers this offseason after starting his career with the Dallas Cowboys, and the running back revealed the Cowboys didn't give him an offer over the offseason.

"They never made an offer at all in free agency," Dowdle said on Nightcap (3:45 mark). "... They told me to go out and they're gonna let me test the market. So I didn't take a liking to that, cause I thought, maybe what I'd been through in my five years, what I was able to do once I was given the opportunity to run the ball, I thought maybe they would have an offer. They didn't, and it worked out for me and I'm getting to show now. I'm happy where I'm at now."

The Cowboys are likely regretting their decision not to offer Dowdle, considering the season he's had so far. The 27-year-old has collected 472 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground through six games, adding 104 yards and a score through the air.

In a revenge game against Dallas last week, had had 183 rushing yards and 56 yards through the air.

Carolina brought Dowdle in to serve as a backup for Chuba Hubbard, but at this point, he might be close to earning RB1 status.
