50-Year-Old Jim Morrison Makes History Skiing Down Mount Everest in Video, Photos

Mike ChiariOct 17, 2025

Jim Morrison, a 50-year-old American skier and mountaineer, made history this week by becoming the first person to ever successfully ski down Mount Everest's North Face.

According to National Geographic (h/t People's Natasha Dye), Morrison accomplished the feat Wednesday and dedicated it to his late partner, Hilaree Nelson, who died from a fall off Nepal's Manaslu mountain in 2022.

Morrison descended Everest on skis until he reached the Central Rongbuk Glacier, which is a route known as the Supercouloir. Per National Geographic, his descent began at 29,032 feet.

That height essentially marks the peak of Mount Everest, which is the highest mountain above sea level in the world.

Morrison told National Geographic that he had been working on making the descent a reality for six years after having made two unsuccessful attempts previously.

He called the conditions this time around "abominable," and noted that the mountain was "super steep and unrelenting from top to bottom."

Morrison found motivation in dedicating the endeavor to Nelson, divulging that he spread her ashes at the Mount Everest summit and "had a little conversation" with his late partner.

Simply reaching the top of Mount Everest has long been considered the pinnacle of mountain climbing, but Morrison upped the ante with his remarkable descent on skis.
