Kelsey Mitchell Reportedly Stays with Caitlin Clark, Fever After Agreeing to $1.4M Supermax Contract
Three-time All-Star Kelsey Mitchell is returning to the Indiana Fever after agreeing to a one-year, $1.4 million supermax deal with the team, according to Chiney Ogwumike of ESPN.
Many would've assumed the worst for the 2025 Fever if told before the start of the season that Caitlin Clark would appear in just 13 games. The 2024 Rookie of the Year battled multiple injuries, and a groin problem in mid-July was ultimately season-ending.
But Indiana managed to finish 24-20 and upset the Atlanta Dream in the first round of the playoffs before going the distance with the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals.
Mitchell was one of the biggest reasons why the Fever qualified for the playoffs and improved upon their finish from a year earlier.
The 5'8" guard averaged 20.2 points and 3.4 assists, and she was a 39.4 percent shooter from beyond the arc. She earned her first All-WNBA nod and finished fifth in the MVP voting.
Mitchell also stepped up in the playoffs. She scored a game-high 24 points in the closeout win over the Dream and then had 34 points in the opening semifinals game against the Aces.
Few teams were more intriguing this offseason than the Fever. Historically, Indiana hasn't been a magnet for marquee stars, but no other franchise is set up better for the next few years.
Three-time All-Star Aliyah Boston has one year left on her rookie deal, and her $94,740 salary is a massive bargain in the WNBA's new financial climate. Clark has another two years to run on her deal and will collect $183,455 total. Boston and Clark will both be restricted free agents when the contracts expire, too, giving the Fever matching rights on any offer sheet.
With Boston and Clark under team control, Indiana has a leg up from a team-building perspective, and that's something general manager Amber Cox can pitch to free agents.
In addition, stars couldn't have helped but notice how the shorthanded Fever performed under head coach Stephanie White. A starting five of Mitchell, Boston, Natasha Howard, Lexie Hull and Odyssey Sims pushed the Aces to the brink. It certainly looks like White is a good enough tactician to deliver a deep postseason with a stronger squad.
When it came to Mitchell, her 2025 performance made the decision about trying to re-sign her easier. Keeping her in Indianapolis had to be a priority.
Cox can cross that off the Fever's checklist. Now, the question is how much more the GM can strengthen the supporting cast around Mitchell, Boston and Clark.
