Washington was clinging to a two-point lead when quarterback Jayden Daniels fumbled during a handoff to Jacory Croskey-Merritt on a 3rd-and-1. Cornerback Nahshon Wright recovered the ball for the Bears with 3:07 on the clock.

Chicago's offense moved the ball into position for Jake Moody to nail a 38-yard field goal as time expired.

"I just lost the ball. Completely my fault," Daniels said of the pivotal turnover. "Didn't give Bill a chance, so it's my fault."

It's too early to weigh the full cost of the defeat for Washington, which fell to 3-3. The team is only one game back of the first-place Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC West, and the gap is the same for the last wild-card spot.

The Commanders could wind up making the playoffs with little drama. Should one game have an outsized impact in the division race or wild-card battle, they'll ultimately rue what happened in Week 6 even more.
