The Rock Jokes He Should Be John Cena's WWE Retirement Match, Talks Booking Influence

WWE legend John Cena's farewell match is just a few months away on Dec. 13, and a fellow icon would've liked the opportunity to send him off.

During an appearance on the New Heights podcast, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson joked that he should've been picked as Cena's final opponent, though he eventually relented while explaining that Cena deserves to make his own choice for his retirement match.

"You know, I have a tiny bit of influence in the booking of it, but really, it's whoever John wants," The Rock said (1:05:30 mark). "Really, that's what it comes down to, whoever he wants. ... That guy has earned it."

Dave Meltzer reported last week in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther has been tabbed as Cena's opponent for his retirement match in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 13 at Saturday Night's Main Event. The 17-time World Champion only has four advertised dates remaining on his retirement tour, which most recently featured an instant classic against AJ Styles at Saturday's Crown Jewel premium live event in Perth, Australia.

The Rock once played a major role in Cena's retirement tour, kicking off his heel turn at the Elimination Chamber PLE in February with a brutal beatdown of Cody Rhodes. The segment, which also featured rapper Travis Scott, was initially well-received by fans, but The Rock's lack of participation in the rest of the storyline due to his acting commitments left things on a sour note.

Cena followed The Rock's footsteps from the wrestling ring to Hollywood and will fully focus on his acting endeavors next year once his in-ring career comes to an end. The Rock praised Cena for staying true to himself throughout his legendary tenure with WWE.

"The best part about John is he comes as advertised, so who you think he is, that's who he is," The Rock said. "And he's a good dude, and I love that guy."
