Browns Reportedly Trade for Tyson Campbell, Jags Get Greg Newsome with Draft Pick Swap

The Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars are swapping cornerbacks.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Browns are sending Greg Newsome and a 2026 sixth-round pick (originally from the New York Jets) for Tyson Campbell and a 2026 7th-round pick (originally from Philadelphia).

Midseason trades in the NFL aren't as common as other sports, and teams exchanging players at the same position aren't common either, so Wednesday's move is an interesting one.

Campbell, 25, has six interceptions and 42 passes defensed in parts of five seasons. He's posted 34 tackles and six passes defensed this season. The Jaguars signed him to a four-year, $76.5 million extension in July 2024, clearly seeing him as part of their long-term plans.

It would appear that thinking has changed. Whether the move has anything to do with two-way rookie Travis Hunter is unclear, though the like-for-like trade makes it seem unlikely that Hunter was the main consideration.

Newsome, also 25, has three interceptions and 37 passes defensed in parts of five seasons, with 23 tackles and three passes defensed in 2025. He's playing this season on his $3.3 million fifth-year option and will be a free agent after the year.

One potential interpretation for the deal is simply that the Jaguars wanted to clear some long-term money off their books at the position while maintaining a quality option this year, given their 4-1 start. The new regime in Jacksonville also may not have seen Campbell as a long-term fit.

The Browns, meanwhile, may have liked adding a player with a few more years on his deal, with the possibility of Newsome simply bolting in free agency.

As so the two teams swapped corners in the type of deal you rarely see, and both Campbell and Newsome get a change in scenery.
