British Open 2015: Real-Time Leaderboard Updates for Saturday Leaders

Chris RolingJul 18, 2015

Mother Nature had her say in the 2015 British Open Friday at St. Andrews' Old Course in Scotland, setting up an epic Saturday featuring more than a round of action.

On Friday, the headline group of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama didn't make it all the way through the course, playing until past 11 p.m. local time thanks to a three-hour rain delay earlier in the morning. Some didn't make it past the halfway mark.

The result? A thrilling day of leaderboard-shuffling madness. As if the delays and bunched action were not enough, countless names rest within striking distance of the lead as they battle one another and the elements.

Top Names to Watch

Danny Willett

Forget the absence of Rory McIlroy, the consistency issues of Dustin Johnson and the hottest golfer alive, Jordan Spieth.

Danny Willett is the top sensation in golf right now.

While not a household name, Willett captured the attention of the globe by running roughshod on the competition at his home course over the first two rounds. His initial reaction to praise says it all:

Willett continues to be in the conversation for first place after a 66 in Round 1 and 69 to follow. Were it not for three total bogeys, the conversation would be even more different.

Not bad for a guy who missed the cut at The Players Championship and U.S. Open.

Most years, the British Open produces an unexpected winner. Right now, the favorite for such an honor has to be Willett.

Zach Johnson

Want an underrated name to watch this weekend?

Try Zach Johnson, who entered the stormy conditions off the North Sea after tying for third at the John Deere Classic. In fact, three of his last four outings were top-six performances.

As ESPN Stats & Info notes, Johnson is also quite the consistent performer at this particular tournament:

He stayed true to form in Round 1 with seven birdies and one bogey for a 66. He dipped for a 71 in Round 2, highlighted by three bogeys on the back nine, but given the circumstances, Johnson held together quite well.

As he readies for Round 3, it's quite clear Johnson will be in the thick of things until the end. If he can right the ship in stormy conditions while others struggle, he might just pull off the epic upset.

Jordan Spieth

It's impossible to ignore the winner of this season's first two majors.

Spieth came out hot and shot a whopping seven birdies for a 67 in Round 1, but he is one of many who has seen his play fluctuate due to the poor conditions.

As BBC Sport illustrates, he also seemed to lead player outrage over the decision to attempt to continue Round 2 Saturday morning, which led to another delay:

For a young player who showed no issues overcoming adversity to take the Masters and U.S. Open, this is just the latest step on the march to making history.

Spieth doesn't show any true signs of slowing despite the iffy conditions, which should scare the opposition. Should he overcome all this for a win, there won't be any denying him as the sport's top name.
