Athlete Dies During Swim Portion of Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Race in Waco, Texas

Race organizers of the Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Waco, Texas, announced that an athlete who participated in this past weekend's event has died.

Per Natasha Dye of People, the news was confirmed Sunday in a post on the triathlon's official Facebook account.

"We are saddened to confirm the death of a race participant during the Ironman 70.3 Waco triathlon," organizers said in a statement. "During the swim portion of today's event, water safety personnel identified the athlete who required medical attention. The athlete was attended to quickly and provided immediate medical care by water safety personnel before being transported to the hospital where they sadly passed."

The athlete's identity and the cause of death have not been disclosed.

"We send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the athlete and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time," the statement continued. "Our gratitude goes out to the water safety personnel and first responders who worked quickly to assist the athlete."

Widely regarded as one of the most difficult athletic events in the world, an Ironman Triathlon typically consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.22-mile run completed in that order, for a total of 140.6 miles. This is far from the first time tragedy has occurred at an event, particularly during the swim portion.

In July, a 31-year-old father died during the swim portion of the Ironman 70.3 Swansea triathlon in Wales. According to the BBC, it was determined that he suffered "exertional heat stroke," which resulted in a cardiac arrest. In 2021, a competitor in the Ironman 70.3 North American Championship St. George died during the swim portion of the Utah event. In 2019, two athletes died while competing in the swim portion of the three-part race in Madison, Wisconsin.
