HSFB Player Daniel Rivera Dies at Age 15 After Collapsing During Game on Sideline

A Texas high school football player died days after collapsing on the sideline during a game on Sept. 26.

Corrigan-Camden ISD announced Saturday the death of Daniel Rivera, 15.

"Daniel was not only a dedicated student but also a passionate athlete, a loyal friend, and a cherished member of our Bulldog Family," the district said. "His energy, kindness and determination left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

"We extend our deepest condolences to Daniel's family, friends and teammates, who all are grieving this profound loss. During this incredibly difficult time, we encourage everyone to support one another and honor Daniel's memory through unity, compassion, and strength."

Jude Ratcliff of CBS 19 in Tyler, Texas, reported that Rivera suffered a "medical emergency" as Corrigan-Camden was playing Joaquin. He was standing on the sideline and not taking part in the action when the situation arose.

According to Ratcliff, Rivera was transported to a local hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

Corrigan-Camden athletic director Brett Ratliff described Rivera as a "hard-working, blue-collar kid."

"He is an amazing kid with an amazing family," Ratliff said to Brian Besch of the Polk County Enterprise. He is a very helpful person that has such a good heart. He is a very quiet and reserved guy, but he has a great sense of humor."
