Tyreek Hill Trade Reportedly Was Never 'Real Option' for Chiefs Prior to WR's Injury
As the Miami Dolphins struggled to start the season and the Kansas City Chiefs lacked playmakers while Xavier Worthy was hurt and Rashee Rice suspended, Tyreek Hill potentially being traded to Kansas City became a popular topic.
But it was never going to happen, even before Hill dislocated his knee and tore his ACL.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, "While fantasy managers and fans dreamed up reunion scenarios, I'm told Hill was never considered a real option in Kansas City, even as the Chiefs stumbled out of the gate."
As for the Chiefs, the eventual return of Rice in Week 7 is seen as the addition the passing offense truly needs.
"He's better than any trade we could make," a team source told Russini. "People don't realize how good he is."
Rice, 25, caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2023 and looked well on his way to besting that least season, posting 24 catches for 288 yards and two scores in four games before suffering a torn LCL that cut his campaign short.
Getting Worthy back was also big. The speedy wideout caught five passes for 83 yards and added two rushes for 38 yards in Sunday's 37-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens, the first game this season where the offense truly seemed right.
"He's just so explosive," quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters after the game. "When you get the ball in his hands, man, it just makes defenses have to adjust. And when they adjust, because he gets so much attention on him, other guys can make plays happen. Just having him out there, not only for his physical abilities but just the morale of the [locker room], I thought it was huge."
Worthy and Rice should provide a solid one-two punch at wideout once the latter returns, with players like Travis Kelce and Hollywood Brown also providing Mahomes with options. There was plenty of concern in Kansas City after an 0-2 start, but the Chiefs seem to have righted the ship, and more help is on the way.
In that regard, it makes sense that a Hill reunion was never really considered.
