49ers' Brock Purdy Out vs. Buccaneers With Toe Injury, Mac Jones Likely to Start

Timothy RappOct 10, 2025

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was ruled out of the team's matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday with a toe injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Backup quarterback Mac Jones is listed as questionable despite being considered the "likely starting option" for San Francisco, per Rapoport.

Despite Purdy's absence, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported that he was pushing a weight sled on Friday as he continues to recover.

Injuries have been the prevalent storyline for both Purdy and the Niners this season. The 2023 Pro Bowler missed both Week 2 and Week 3 with a toe injury, returned from the injury in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and was again sidelined with the issue during a short week before a Thursday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

In that game alone, the Niners were without Purdy, tight end George Kittle and wideouts Brandon Aiyuk (who opened the season on injured reserve), Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings, not to mention edge-rusher Nick Bosa.

Purdy's injury woes meant plenty of playing time for Jones, and stepped in admirably before getting hurt himself, leading the team to a 3-0 record in his starts while throwing for 905 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.

But the Niners would surely love to have a nice, long, healthy stretch for their starting quarterback and playmakers. Health issues nuked the 2024 season for San Francisco. They've handled similar injury concerns better in 2025—having a healthy Christian McCaffrey has helped—but at some point the dam will break if the team's best players can't stay on the field.
