Sophie Cunningham Starts 'Joke' GoFundMe for Fines After Criticizing WNBA Commish
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham started a GoFundMe after receiving multiple fines across the 2025 WNBA season.
"This is more of a joke than anything. For fines only or to charity or for a yacht idk…." Cunningham wrote on the page while setting a goal of $26,000:
In an August episode of her podcast, the seventh-year veteran said she was "officially 3-for-3 on being fined by the WNBA," having publicly criticized the league's officiating.
"I promise you, everyone in our league feels that way and I'm just kind of the only one who says something," she said as a guest on The Young Man and The Three last month.
More recently, Cunningham has taken square aim at WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
On Tuesday, Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier read a prepared statement to start her exit interview with reporters.
During her monologue, she referenced a past conversation she had with Engelbert in which she pointed out the low salaries for WNBA rookies. The Fever's Caitlin Clark, for example, made $78,066 in 2024, and that's far less than the revenue she helped to generate for the WNBA.
Engelbert purportedly responded that Clark "should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn't make anything."
Cunningham was among the WNBA players who pushed back at the commissioner's supposed remarks. She called Engelbert "the most delusional leader our league has ever seen."
The criticism continued during the Fever's exit interviews Thursday.
Cunningham told reporters that the WNBA's leadership is "failing us as a league" and "failing us as players":
The WNBA has yet to levy any fines against Collier or any other players. Should that happen, Cunningham's status as a repeat offender means she'll have to write a bigger check than many of her peers.
