Marray, Qureshi def. Krajicek, Ram
After dropping the first set via a tiebreak, Jonathan Marray and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi defeated American duo Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.
Ram was coming into the doubles semifinal match with a chance to repeat history, as the Tennis Hall of Fame pointed out:
But it was his opposition that took the second set 6-2 and the decisive tiebreaker 10-6.
With their backs against the wall, Marray and Qureshi saved their best work until then, saving all four of their break point opportunities.
They were also utilizing their serving prowess, recording four aces to Krajicek and Ram's one on the morning.
They will face the winner of Nicholas Monroe and Mate Pavic against Fabrice Martin and Purav Raja, who will be the third and final match on Saturday.
Ivo Karlovic def. Dustin Brown
Ivo Karlovic took down Dustin Brown in straight sets on Friday afternoon to book his place in the singles semifinals.
Karlovic proved to be utterly unstoppable on his serves, recording 23 aces in the match as Brown could not find a way to handle a return.
And even when he could, Karlovic made easy work of his returns, as the Tennis Hall of Fame shows:
Of the 23 first service points that Karlovic won in the first set, 17 of them were aces on his way to a 7-6(3) win.
While his second set numbers were far more pedestrian with just six aces, Karlovic was able to close out Brown 6-3. While Brown was able to return more of Karlovic's screaming serves, he did not fare much better, winning just one of a possible 16 return points.
Jack Sock def. Jan Hernych
It was not a good start for Jack Sock, who dropped the first game of the first set against Jan Hernych. But losing one game was good enough for Sock to get to the semifinals, as Hernych was forced to retire from the match due to an injury.
He was visibly distraught as the Tennis Hall of Fame shows:
Sock will face Karlovic in the second match of the day on Saturday. His recipe for victory will be based upon one single facet of his game: His ability to return Karlovic's serve. If he is able to do so, expect this semifinal match to go the distance.
The first semifinal match of Saturday will feature Ram against John-Patrick Smith, as they will proceed the Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony that will honor Amelie Mauresmo, Nancy Jeffett and David Hall. On tennis' ceremonial grounds, the day's players will try to replicate the success that the newest Hall of Famers once attained.
