Rex Ryan Says Shedeur Sanders 'Should Be Embarrassed That You're Not the QB Right Now'

Timothy RappSep 29, 2025

Rex Ryan, who had a career record of 61-66 as a head coach and failed to reach the postseason in six of his eight years leading the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, had a blustery take about Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders during Monday's Get Up.

"This kid talks and he runs his mouth," Ryan said. "Like he said, 'I can be a starting quarterback' with his arms crossed like this. Get your ass in the front row and study and do all that. If I know, the whole league knows. Quit being an embarrassment that way. You've got the talent to be the quarterback, you should be. You should be embarrassed that you're not the quarterback now."

Ryan was referencing Sanders' comments to ESPN Cleveland last week, when he said he believes he's capable of playing the quarterback position better than some of the starters around the NFL at the moment:

On one hand, Sanders is currently a third-string quarterback on his own team making those comments, so they were bound to raise a few eyebrows. On the other hand, Ryan went a bit nuclear on the rookie for fairly innocuous comments.

At this point, it feels like everything Sanders does is a lightning rod for outsized reactions and takes, and it's tiresome. He's a rookie in a very weird situation in Cleveland, where the team is persisting with Joe Flacco (two touchdowns, six interceptions, 58.1 completion percentage, nine sacks taken) and drafted Dillon Gabriel ahead of Sanders.

Are we really going to be angry at Sanders for expressing belief in his own abilities? Are we just going to assume that he isn't putting in the work, rather than placing blame on the Browns for having an incredibly strange process in this entire situation?

Maybe Sanders ultimately just isn't good enough and the Browns recognized that early on, but at the moment, we just don't know.
